Bergen County teacher accused of sexual relationship with student

New Jersey's Star-Ledger reports that for the second time in the past month, a Bergen County teacher has been accused of sex offenses with a student.

Lyndhurst High School's head football coach was arrested and charged last week with sexual assault, child endangerment and witness tampering.

The coach also serves as a physical education teacher at the school.

He's accused of being in a sexual relationship with the female student in 2009 and 2010.

According to the newspaper, she told investigators that the 39-year-old coach told her to lie if questioned by police about the relationship.

The coach is a 1990 graduate of Lyndhurst High, with a Bachelor of Science degree from Montclair State University and a master's in education from New Jersey City University.

He also teaches classes in health and fitness for life, but does not have tenure, the school's superintendent told the newspaper.

The investigation of the coach began when another Lyndhurst teacher told authorities about the alleged relationship between the coach and student.

The coach's bail was set at $150,000. There was no option to post 10 percent for a bond.

Prior to joining the staff at Lyndhurst, he was head football coach at Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest for eight years.

In early January, a Park Ridge math teacher was arrested on allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a female high school junior.

In similar cases, suspects should speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney before discussing the accusations with police or prosecutors.
