Rutherford man arrested in hit-and-run

Earlier today, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office announced the arrest of a Rutherford man, 24, suspected in a hit-and-run accident last week.

The welder has been arrested for reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a serious injury, the prosecutor and a Rutherford police captain said in a statement.

The suspect was released on a $25,000 bail, but was to have a hearing this afternoon, the Cliffview Pilot reported.

According to the Pilot, shortly before midnight last Tuesday, a Kearny woman, 44, was hit by a 1990 Jeep Comanche pick-up truck.

Officers who arrived on the scene said they found the woman lying in the middle of the street near the intersection of Meadow Road and East Passaic Avenue.

She's listed in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center, according to the media report.

In the statement from the prosecutor, he said investigators believe the woman was crossing East Passaic Avenue when she was hit by a vehicle making a left-hand turn onto Passaic from Meadow Road. The vehicle then apparently ran over the woman.

Investigators were later given information indicating a truck owned by the suspect was involved in the crash. By Friday, investigators believed the owner was also the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

In similar cases, it's wise for the defendants to get the legal help of an experienced criminal defense attorney who will conduct an investigation of his own to determine what happened and who was involved. The attorney will also ensure that the defendant's rights are protected at all times.
