It’s about the time to get your Irish celebration on. With the holiday just around the corner, you should start thinking about your Saint Patrick’s Day plans, especially who be driving. As a well-known drinking holiday, the Irish celebration has some of the highest drinking and driving rates of the year.
Driving Statistics
In addition to their Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, the Department of Transportation is running a new Banish Drunk Driving on St. Patrick’s Day campaign. Additionally, the department has released a number of statistics regarding drunk driving, including:
- From 2012 to 2016, 269 lives were lost in alcohol-related crashes between 6 P.M. and 6 A.M on Saint Patrick’s Day.
- In 2016, accidents caused by drunk driving fatally injured more than 10,000 people, and 60 deaths occurred over the Saint Patrick’s Day holiday period alone.
- On March 18th, 2016, 69% of car accident fatalities involved a drunk driver.
In an effort to decrease drunk driving this weekend, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is promoting their SaferRide mobile app. The app uses GPS technology to pinpoint the user’s location, and sends it to a taxi while scheduling a pickup. Users can also alert a predetermined friend through the app. It is available for free via iTunes for iOS devices, or on Google Play for Android devices.
